Cashing in: Instagram unveils new checkout feature

Pray for your bank balance - you will soon be able to spend money on your favourite items without ever leaving the Instagram app.

The social network announced today a significant update to its shopping functionality that allows users to tap on product tags within a shoppable post and buy the items directly in the app.

Launching in partnership with 20 world famous brands from Adidas, Nike, MAC Cosmetics and Zara, to Oscar de la Renta, Burberry and Balmain, Instagram is certainly transforming the world of e-commerce as we know it.

They say the checkout process will be really simple. Users will click on the new ‘Checkout on Instagram’ button, fill out their name, email address, billing information and shipping details, and Instagram will store this information safely and securely so the next time you want to update your wardrobe or refresh your make-up bag, it’ll be quicker and more streamlined than ever.

Currently in a closed beta stage, only available to users in the US accessing Instagram via the mobile app, it will no doubt roll out to the UK soon and replace the current, very clunky user journey which redirects shoppers from a shoppable post to a brand website to complete their transaction.

As ever, we’ll keep an ear out for more updates and fill you in as soon as we have more information - but this looks set to be a major shift in the way brands drive value and sales through social media.
