Don’t give up on Twitter just yet: it hits 9 million monthly users & bets big on live video

One of the top stories in the 50th edition of our Battenhall Monthly news digest focused on what the deal is with Twitter.

With all eyes on Snapchat and Instagram Stories, there’s a sense that Twitter has been lagging behind. Yet, the company’s resilience shows no slowing down, as it rolled out big live video plans over the long weekend. Basketball, baseball, golf and news content from the likes of Bloomberg and Buzzfeed, as well as Live Nation concerts, will be among the live video streams coming to Twitter. The Bloomberg collab will be one of the first to kick off, with 24/7 round-the-clock live streaming news that’s unique to Twitter.

Twitter’s intentions to get in on the live video game shouldn’t come as a huge surprise. The social network released its financial figures and latest user numbers last week, which showed better than expected results and revealed 800+ hours of live video streaming from content partners across more than 450 events, reaching 45 million unique viewers. That’s up 31% from the previous quarter!

The strong user growth in Q1 is another reason why brands shouldn’t start giving up on Twitter yet, as the platform sits comfortably at 9 million monthly users - its biggest gain in two years. On top of this, the daily active usage increased 14% year-over-year and the company’s financial announcement beat earnings forecasts and analyst expectations, with a revenue that totalled $548 million in Q1 (Wall Street expectations were $512 million!).

As Variety reports, Twitter’s ultimate long-range goal is to deliver nonstop live video on the platform, and the company will make its debut at the 2017 Digital Content NewFronts on May 1, where it will pitch its upcoming programming slate to marketers.

Keep a look out for an upgrade to Twitter's look and feel as these updates take shape, and we'll expect to see user numbers and behaviours changing in due course too.
