Foursquare reinvents social discovery by breaking itself in two: meet Swarm

Foursquare has today made a major announcement that will affect the world of location-based social networking. It has decided to break itself in two; a new app for local and social discovery called Swarm, and old Foursquare will evolve in tandem. Swarm will be coming out this summer.

As reported by The Verge:

Swarm will be a social heat map, helping users find friends nearby and check in to share their location. A completely rewritten Foursquare app will launch in a month or so. The new Foursquare will ditch the check-in and focus solely on exploration and discovery, finally positioning itself as a true Yelp-killer in the battle to provide great local search.

I am a huge fan of Foursquare. My 7-day high score is 500 (nerd-out), I was kind of responsible for one of the first specials in the UK, and my experiments (here and here) in using Foursquare for discovery were long before this Swarm business was being talked about. So I am looking forward to the new Foursquare experience and seeing what it might do to the way social media is used for discovery and also how we use other apps that integrate with Foursquare - namely Instagram and Twitter.

Brands that are on Foursquare should check out its evolution and Swarm at the earliest opportunity and see how to get involved in how it will begin being used.
