How to draft the perfect first tweet, CIA style (and 9 other epic first tweets)

Last week the CIA posted its first ever tweet. And it was brilliant:

The tweet has been shared almost half a million times - 277k retweets and 166k favourites. There's a level of humour in there you might not expect from the CIA, which has no doubt helped. And the whole NSA issue has propelled all secret services into the limelight somewhat too. That's all really important when drafting your first tweet. You need to make people want to share it.

There are still a great many brands and individuals entering Twitter and the pressure to create the perfect first tweet is mega-stressful for some. If you want to take a look at a few brands yet to start tweeting, our report on the FTSE 100 on Twitter lists them. And here is a brief list of some of my favourite first tweets of all time.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the biggest footy player on Twitter, and his first tweet created a pretty modest response:

Hillary Clinton thanked her creators and showed a bit of personality too:

Google wins on the tech geekery scale:

Oprah wins on the shoutiness scale:

And most brands are actually pretty rubbish. Like Amazon...

... and Heineken.

Nike's is pretty good (it links to a classic pic on Instagram).

But we'll end with Cher. Just because she is so beautifully random (this wasn't her first, just the best).
